Why does Google Chrome use a separate updater?

Why would google choose not to integrate updating with their browser like firefox, instead requiring a separate application? As far as I can see there's no way to check for updates from within the browser so the Updater seems to be indispensible. Why does Google Chrome use a separate updater?

You'll see "Checking for updates" and if one is available you'll see "A new version of Google Chrome is available" along with a button that says "Update Now."Why does Google Chrome use a separate updater?
