Most xenon lamps seem to require a ballast or a conversion kit before it may be used in a regular car. However, many people are selling inexpensive HID bulbs and claim that these can be just snapped in place of existing halogen bulbs in regular cars. Who is fooling the customer here or there's something else? Why do Xenon HID headlights require a ballast?
If I understand your question correctly, I think the ballast just converts the voltage or whatever. Those HID bulbs that claim they can be snapped into place are most likely HID look a likes. They are basically a halogen bulb with a blue coating. They are crap. Now if it really is an HID bulb that snaps into place, then it probably wont work or melt your wiring. If you are shopping for an HID kit, and they say the kit is plug and play that is alright. Plug and play kits mean the wires to the ballast and stuff just snap into each other. Why do Xenon HID headlights require a ballast?
I think the bulbs since they are really gas arc lamps they need A/C voltage to ignite the ballasts convert the DC to AC..
.
The cheapo HID kits are NOT HID they are a SCAM!!! HID systems cost more than a hundred bucks U.S, They have come down in price recently so 3 4 hundred to your door is about right.
