It is the zone in the sky where the Sun, Moon, and planets can be seen. The Sun, Moon, and planets move from constellation to constellation over time, but never stray from the zodiac into other parts of the sky. The ecliptic is the apparent path the Sun travels over the course of a year. The ecliptic passes through thirteen constellations. Twelve of these comprise the zodiac, with the Sun spending from eight days (Scorpius) to six weeks (Virgo) in each.
