1986 Ford Econoline won't start?

1987 Ford Econoline 350 Jayco Motor home on 86 Chassis won't start. We tried jumping it, checking battery cables, hitting starter -- nothing. We have headlights but that is it - no interior lights, dash lights, radio, tail lights.. nothing else. we pulled the headlight switch on and off and finally got it to give us power but only in one certain spot. we removed the headlight switch and no change (headlight switch is acting like the ground).

anything to test / replace ?1986 Ford Econoline won't start?
are you sure that the battery is good ?

also check the starter selinoid, fords are notorious for losing power with a bad starter selinoid or loose wires connected to them.
I would suspect the ignition switch. Especially if there is any play or wear to it. This would explain just headlights working.

Try bumping the switch, repeatedly turning the key and varying the pressure you turn with. In other words, just mess around with it and try to get it to work. This is a common problem for Fords...

Good luck1986 Ford Econoline won't start?
check out a couple of things. check to see if the gas is reaching the engine and check to see if you have spark at the plugs. if no gas then change the fuel filter. if no spark then it could be the coil.
Take a pair of jumper cables hook one end to the body and the other to the engine then try to start it. If it starts then go through and clean all body and frame grounds.1986 Ford Econoline won't start?
You have no chassis ground or a very poor one, and it's grounding or trying to throught the light circuit. Follow the negative cable down to where it attaches and clean it off. good luck
